Technology TreatsSince the 1950’s people have been using methods to measure the colour & appearance of objects for a variety of reasons. This was traditionally carried out on a “Color-i-meter” using filters to calculate recognised scales such as Hunters L,a,b with the main purpose to replicate what the human was seeing. With the demands of industry changing the Spectrophotometer was introduced and used as an instrument for physical analysis providing wavelength-by-wavelength spectra analysis of the reflecting and/or transmitting properties of objects without interpretation by a human. The Spectrophotometer can indirectly calculate psychophysical (Colorimetric) information. The Spectrophotometer is ideal for noticing changes in appearance and sample properties before the human will notice and in most cases when they can’t notice. This information can be used in reducing production costs, working out what effects a sample and providing evidence that the products is of a certain way and/or quality. The industry has and still today experiences “hand held” instruments that have been built to be a low cost solution for If you need to measure colour/appearance outside the laboratory. These Instruments are ideal for measuring samples on the plant production floor, in storage areas, shipping departments or virtually anywhere that is convenient. Lower cost models tend not to be built to measure samples accurately and their build is often less likely to simulate the humans perception making quality decisions difficult. Today leading manufactures have created “portable” instruments that are small enough to be easily picked up and re-located, contain the technology of larger bench top models and remove the fatigue of hand held instruments.
Hunterlab’s ColorFlex EZ : - Is a Spectrophotometer. - Used correctly will actually see you make a profit out of the instrument after 3/6 months. - Looks at the product and provides figures that relate to how the human would perceive it. - Is being used in Industry to make improvements in production processes that cut costs. - Is being used to document products to meet customers’ expectations. - Can be used with/without software. - Data can be transferred via USB.
